Horse Training Tips and Information for Equine Owners

Training for your horse is as necessary as making sure your children get a good education. Natural equine behavior has very little to do with the things people ask of them, and it falls on the rider to learn enough horsemanship to ride safely (for horse and rider) and intelligently. Horses can't intuit the reasons for bits, reins and stirrups: it's when horse and rider work together that they construct a language for communicating. Training your horse is important if you want to work together to achieve anything—whether it's basic riding or more complicated activities such as eventing, reining and cutting or dressage. If you plan to take your horse to shows, you will certainly be engaged in some training beforehand!
Because horses don't communicate the way people do, people need training to understand the behavior exhibited by equines. Riding lessons are an important way to start understanding how to talk to your horse not only verbally, but by using your hands, legs and seat to speak a common language. Children should have riding lessons to teach them the importance of caring for their horses as well as the correct way to ride.

Training Tip: Consider Working with a Trainer When Training a Horse

Working with a reputable trainer is another way of understanding your horse; tips and tricks that seem natural to horse insiders may be unimaginable to a novice, and a trainer can save you a lot of time by training you with your horse. When you're working with your horse, remember that you aren't just learning a set of skills; you are also learning the way your horse understands the world. The better you understand each other, the more you will come to trust in and rely on each other's judgment. Expert riders say it's the two way communication and respect between horse and rider that make for perfect performance—in any arena.

The Right Saddle for Cutting or Reining

For cutting and reining horse events, you definitely need a saddle that’s designed to help you "ride in balance and sit the stop." First, you want a saddle that was designed and built specifically for reining or cutting. Both of these designs have their individual advantages but remember, just because the manufacturer "calls" it a reining saddle doesn’t mean it was designed "well" for reining.
