Horse Shows and Competitions Information

Attending horse shows is one way for the whole family to share an interest that extends beyond the computer or the TV in the living-room. While much of our daily lives are made up of sedentary activities, visiting equine events can appeal to sports fans, animal lovers and those who find competitions fascinating. Small children will enjoy watching the horse: older ones may find the finer points of riding or judging catch their interest.
There are hundreds of horse shows arranged all over the country: if you're not sure which ones your family would prefer, try attending events in Western riding, rodeos, show jumping competitions and dressage events. Talk with your children about the differences between the various types of shows, the usual riding clothes, the way the horses are groomed, and the expectations of the events. Teach your kids about the differences in the types of horse and ponies and encourage them to learn as much about horses as they can.

Owning a Horse Taken a Lot of Time and Effort

Horse ownership is a commitment, but some families discover that keeping horses brings them closer together. Horses need to be cared for on a daily basis: children can help feed, water and curry them. Caring for an animal teaches responsibility and fosters an affectionate relationship, something many people find a vastly rewarding part of life. If you live in the city or can't have a horse for other reasons, you can still participate in equestrian interests by way of magazines and horse shows, attending carriage races or visiting old-fashioned blacksmith and farrier shops to see how these experts work with horses. A love of horses may lead your youngster into 4-H and later into veterinary medicine: interacting with horses will certainly open up a new and real world to children who might otherwise spend all their time in the virtual world.
